The latest release from this sensitive jazz guitarist is notable not only for its unique blend of adventurism and romance, but in the new palette Abercrombie employs in his band. His usual trio of guitar/organ/drums is augmented with Mark Feldman on violin, Kenny Wheeler on trumpet, and Joe Lovano on saxophone. But the music is still quite intimate, despite the broader soundscape.
The disc opens with the subtle groove of "Just In Tune," showcasing Kenny Wheeler's lyrical lines and Abercrombie's bop leanings. The mood flows next into the impressionistic title track, which unfolds in continually surprising ways. Later, "Gimme Five" offers an introspective, melancholy reverie, accented by Feldman's haunting violin work. Throughout, Abercrombie & Co. are consistently inventive, yet remain remarkably accessible, like a dream of rooms and places imagined yet familiar.
